Crate Info

Recycling crates have been provided for each property. If you move house please leave the recycling crate at the property. We ask that all crates have the house number written on them; this prevents theft and also enables the collectors to return them to the correct house.

Crates are lifted and emptied onto the truck by staff so for health and safety reasons we ask that all recycling is clean and the crate is not too heavy to lift easily (approx. 15kg). A second crate should be used rather than overfilling the first one. Recycling crates are made in New Zealand from recycled plastic milk containers.

Christchurch recycling crates have a 45 litre capacity, and Waimakariri crates have a 60 litre capacity. Both are made in New Zealand from recycled plastic. Residents are entitled to two free recycling crates, and can place up to five crates at the gate per week. Additional crates can be purchased from your local Council Service Centre.

Only official council crates are accepted as receptacles for kerbside recycling.

Crate Preparation

The materials you put out for recycling are handled by people, not machines. Please be considerate and follow the guidelines below.

• No hazardous or injurious materials
• No dirty, smelly or offensive materials
• If in doubt, ask yourself if you'd like to handle this item

Do not overload your recycling crate (15kg weight limit per crate)

New recycle bin covers

Recycling crates with bin covers will not be collected as part of the domestic kerbside collection service. Bin covers are not endorsed by the Council or Contractor Waste Management. Bin covers slow down the collection process as the removal of the cover adds an additional layer of complexity to collection. By covering crate contents, bin covers also increase the likelihood of non recyclable products being put into crates.

New and Replacement Crates

Waimakariri District Council

You are entitled to two free crates. Additional crates can be purchased (either to recycle more at the kerbside or to take your recycling to the transfer station) for the retail price of $15.00 including GST.

Christchurch City Council

New and replacement crates can be obtained from your local Council Service Centre.

The Council issue recycling crates on the basis of:

• Two free crates per household
• Additional free replacement crates provided upon evidence of badly damaged crates
• Any other additional crates to be paid for at cost, which will be $12 from 1 January 2007
